Personal

The decision and goal to be a geologist came at 8yo. For over twenty years I have worked towards that end. Today I am a practicing professional geologist and enjoy rocks & dirt as much as I did when I was eight.
During my early adulthood I spent 26 months as a missionary for the Church of Jessu Christ. While I shared the little knowledge I had of scriptures and the meaning of life I learned to work as a team, a leader and a trainer.
A few years later I met Leah my bride of eight years. Leah is one of the most talented, and compassionate individuales I have ever met. She has been my constant companion and support through some of the most trying times of our life.
Out children, Ethan and Eliza joined our little family some six and two years ago respectively. Ethan wants to be a geologist or superhero; personally don't see a difference, Little Eliza spends her time dancing with a clumsy guy she calls 'daddy' and shopping for shoes.

Favorite Authors

Shortly after my bride and I got our first apartment she tossed out out the television because "it did not fit the decor of our place", I belive the decor was 'Poor Student'. I have yet to be granted permission to purchase another. So we spend alot of time reading, which I am told is a good thing.

Alexis de Tocqueville: Democracy in America, in my humble opinion should be required reading for every American youth.

C.S. Forester: the Horatio Hornblower series, from ny own youth I wanted to be Horatio and all that he is.

Tom Clancy: The Hunt for Red October, and most others by Mr. Clancy

James Talmage: First Book of Nature, as well as some of his later non-geologic works.

Hobbies

Wood Boat Design and Construction

Growing up in New Orleans on the Banks of Jean Lafitte Bayou meant I spent my childhood in water. My first bateau, a pirogue meant for the shallow swamps that surrounded my home. Frustrated by the pirogue's inefficiency and lack of secondary stability lead me to design and build a kayak.

Today each of my creations are designed and built according to the paddler; taking some 600+ hourse to hand carve and lay each of over a hundred cedar strips. The final product is blanketed in an epoxy/kevlar layup and hand sanded glass smooth.

Cycling

As a young man I found an athletic outlet in running. In the beginning a mile or two seamed far, by sixteen I was running six plus miles a day. Running evolved into a passion, running first marathons and then ultra-marathons. At twenty five I was determined to compete in an Iron-Man triathlon, only I did not bike. Wearing tights and speeding around on a petite bicycle was not my thing, and then I tried it. I now run only when my bike has a flat and I no spare. Currently relaxation is spending a couple of hourse in the saddle.
